Framed vs. Frameless Shower Design

Framed vs. Frameless Shower Design

Bathrooms are an area of any home that is utilized daily. Creating the perfect atmosphere with stunning design and inclusion of modern contemporary features make sense.  Frameless glass showers, steam showers and tubs are the best choice for a flawless, modern and clean design.

While glass showers in the past required a metal frame, frameless glass shower doors add a minimalist appeal for stylish perfection with a ‘barely there’ effect.

Frameless showers are customized, which means you aren’t limited to mass-produced shower doors at a standard size, i.e. cookie cutter shower. Customization equals flexibility, giving the homeowner more options for a superior custom look and appeal. You, the Homeowner, choose the type of glass clear or decorative; thickness of glass; hardware; etc.

It turns the ordinary into the extraordinary!

The greatest benefit of a frameless shower is the way they look and influence the feel of any bathroom retreat.  Frameless, unfortunately, do not work in all bathrooms, it’s important to make sure you have enough room and setup prior to falling in love with a frameless shower door. Many homeowners prefer them because of their flexibility and design capabilities.

Framed shower doors are still very popular; however, the rage is Frameless!  Framed shower doors, however, can be made equally appealing with aesthetics such as hardware and tile options.

Framed shower doors provide stability and are more watertight, which can prevent spray out from your shower. You still can choose from clear or decorative glass options. Framed showers do come with some constraints, meaning they only open outward, which can be limiting in some occasions.
They can appear somewhat dated in comparison to a “Frameless Shower”.

Frameless Shower Doors offer more of a variety of design options. Choose from a range of styles, sizes and design options.  Doors can swing in or outward, for more flexibility especially when space can be an issue.  Frameless shower doors make a bathroom retreat feel more spacious; airier; and place an emphasis on other design choices you’ve made ~ such as tile.

Another great benefit of frameless shower – they allow light to travel through the shower and bathroom; making it airy and appear larger. Your shower can even be completely enclosed with a steam shower enclosure, and your bathroom will still feel light and open compliments to the frameless design.

When you invest in a stunning bathroom remodel, you desire the design of your bathroom to be fully enjoyed and appreciated.  With a frameless shower design, it provides transparency with no bars, metal and structural frames. The frameless doors allow guests to visually see the emphasis of the tile work, attention to details and hardware.

Frameless shower doors and enclosures are the leading choice for homeowners and bathroom remodels. Come in to discuss options and see photos of previously installed designs.  Barry has years of design experience and can help you visualize your options.

Commercial Storefront Glass Repair and Replacement

When it comes to commercial storefront, first impressions are lasting impressions! Beautiful and safe aesthetics are crucial to captivate your audience.

commercial-storefront-design
Architectural design and safety are crucial for interior and exterior commercial storefront glass

When choosing glass or doors for a commercial business consider the functionality of them first; decorative second. Do you want contents visible to the public or should the contents remain private?  Overall, the glass needs to be safe. For storefront doors the durability is crucial, since customer’s will be entering and exiting the doors on a daily basis, most likely.

Regular, annealed glass when it breaks – breaks into sharp pieces, which can be extremely dangerous.  Door glass must be tempered, which means if tempered glass breaks it breaks into a million tiny pebble like pieces. While this can be messy to clean up, it far safer than annealed.

Other options to consider are security is security glass, laminated glass.  It will not shatter into sharper, jagged pieces. When it broken the laminate glass with brake into what looks like a spider web. It is because the safety laminate holds the glass intact, more so.

Tempered glass is designed to break into a tiny pebble pieces; which helps prevent injury to customers who may be in the area when this happens.

For clarity give consideration to clear; frosted or privacy glass.  Privacy glass will still allow light to penetrate through. Frosted glass is used commonly in doctor or dental office settings; offices or spas.

Easy to Clean Shower Glass Protectant

What is Diamon Fusion?
Diamon-Fusion (DF) is patented, a protective coating applied to the glass to help repel water and soap scum, and other contaminants – making it easier to clean. It reduces the amount of effort needed to clean. Just as with a non-stick cooking pan, the non-stick significantly reduces the time and effort of cleaning the pan.  Same analogy with the DF coating, it reduces the time and effort when cleaning the glass. It reduces cleaning time by approximately 90% with minimal care.

Diamon-Fusion is an “invisible” barrier that repels water and contaminants from sticking to the glass, leaving the glass more visibly appealing. It protects against hard water stains from calcium in the water; soap scum; minerals; and more.

DF Coating Comparison
Diamon-Fusion Coating and No Coating Comparison

Protection Guaranteed
Diamon-Fusion chemically adheres to glass transforming the glass surface into a high performance, hydrophobic surface that protects against staining and corrosion. One the Diamon-Fusion comes in contact with the glass it forms an invisible, thin, protective layer creating a permanent bond.

DF’s Patented Technology
Glass is porous so the surface allows hard water and mineral contaminants to penetrate the surface, causing an unwanted appearance. Diamon-Fusion seals the surface for longer lasting beauty and with less maintenance, than without it.

What do I use to clean the glass with a Diamon Fusion Coating?
Non-abrasive cleaners!  DF’s approved list of cleaners are the following:

*Sprayaway
*We carry Sprayaway in the store for sale
Simple Green
Ammonia Free Windex
White household vinegar diluted with water

Longer-Lasting Beautiful Appearance
Reduces cleaning time and frequency of cleaning necessary
Protects against limescale, soap scum, mineral contaminants
Optical clarity is guaranteed for the lifetime of the glass
Diamon-Fusion’s warranty guarantees that the coating will perform for the        lifetime of the glass as long as the basic care instructions are followed
*You must register DF online after the installation
** You will be given a “How To Register” card by one our Installers
UV Resistant, sunlight won’t break down the coating

Bullet Resistant Glass

In the real world, “Bullet Proof” doesn’t exist! Bullet resistant glass is nothing like its portrayal in the movies, read on.  Bullet resistant glass is often assumed to be bullet proof and is assumed that it stops the bullets with no regards to what is being shot. Bullet resistant glass is manufactured at different “levels.” From level 2 up to level 8, withstanding different projectiles. As the level of protection increases, so does the weight and thickness of glass.

When selecting bullet resistant glass there are number of variables to consider, level of protection is one, composition and spall variant are another.

Ballistic glass is manufactured to meet test criteria by national standards. Technical performance is required to withstand impacts from a range of travelling bullets at specified speeds, and distances.

Bullet resistant glass manufactured from several layers of glass bonded with tough polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer’s. The performance requirements govern the number, thickness of glass layers, therefore affecting the overall thickness and weight of the glass.

On impact the glass is designed to absorb the bullets initial impact energy by shattering the subsequent glass layers and PVB to absorb the lower level shock waves.

Bullet resistant glass is a type of clad polycarbonate by a multi-ply composite laminate combining polycarbonate and glass using special polyurethane adhesion bonding interlayers which allows for contraction or expansion of both materials.

Purchasing and installing bullet resistant glass in the United States is perfectly legal.  You don’t need a police or government permit. We do suggest; however, contacting your local building and/or fire inspector to determine building codes, inspection and/or permits necessary.

What is the difference between types of glass?

Annealed Glass
Annealed glass is regular glass, softer than glass that has been thermally treated and is slowly cooled to relieve any internal stresses. When and if broken annealed glass breaks into jagged shards which can result in injury. It is generally used when strength or safety are not primary concerns, and is the least expensive type of glass.

Tempered Glass
Tempered glass is stronger and harder than annealed glass; it is cut and put through a heating process. Tempered glass is annealed glass that has been treated with heat to harden and strengthen the glass. Almost any glass product can be tempered. When and if tempered glass breaks, it will break into small pebble, or pellet pieces. Hence, why it is often referred to as safety glass.

Laminated Safety Glass
Laminated Safety glass is made by adhering two pieces of annealed glass together by a polyvinyl butyral interlayer (PVB). The vinyl layer holds the glass together if the glass is broken.  Impulse burglaries are resisted by the tough plastic interlayer.
