Acrylics

Acrylic sheet commonly known as Plexiglass, Acrylite, and Lucite is great for general glazing use in doors, windows, and other areas which require a safety glazing material. It is half the weight of similar sized glass but at least 10 times stronger. It is crystal clear and UV stabilized so that it will last for years and years of exposure to the sun without turning yellow or cloudy. The consumer should be aware that all acrylic sheet is not totally unbreakable but does require a significant impact to break the product. When it does break, it is generally into just a few pieces that are not sharp and pose no significant hazard.

Depending upon the manufacturer, source, and method used to produce the sheet, it will come with either a paper or thin film mask to protect the surface until fully installed. If you plan on doing any further fabrication to the sheet, then it is best to specify a product with a paper mask which tends to stay attached throughout repetitive handling.

Clear acrylic sheet is stocked in 1/8" and 1/4" thicknesses but it is available by special order in many other thicknesses.

In addition to clear, acrylic sheet is available in a variety of colors in translucent, transparent, and solid colors. For a color chart of the available industry standard colors, click HERE (PDF format).
